Keith Jackson tears into Rangers captain James Tavernier after defeat v Celtic
Mon 2 September 2024 6:40, UK
Keith Jackson has accused Rangers captain James Tavernier of “throwing in the towel” following the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Celtic on Sunday (1 September).
Philippe Clement is already under heavy pressure at Ibrox, and the loss to their Old Firm rivals at Celtic will do him absolutely no favours.
However, Tavernier, who was linked with a move away from Ibrox during the summer transfer window, has been singled out for his performance, having kept his spot this season.
Writing via the Daily Record on Monday (2 September), Jackson said: “The truth is – as unpalatable as it may be for them to swallow – is that these fans are now on the point of throwing in the towel, in the same way, that captain Tavernier did yesterday afternoon while his team was being taken apart by the neighbours.”
James Tavernier takes brunt of the blame after Rangers v Celtic
As the club captain, Tavernier can have no issues with being singled out by the media a
nd fans alike. The 32-year-old has dedicated almost 10 years of his life to the Gers since joining from Wigan in the summer of 2015, but his time at the club seems to be running out.
Many fans expected him to be walking through the exit doors this summer after clubs came calling, but the right-back remains at Ibrox, as well as in Clement’s starting XI.
With Dujon Sterling still waiting for his chance to prove himself at full-back – being utilised in midfield to get him into the team – fans have been left frustrated by his involvement.

Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement
While Tavernier has been slammed for another dreadful performance, the manager should be taking the brunt of the blame, having prepared his side to face Brenden Rodgers’ team at Celtic Park.
The Gers have secured just one victory against their Old Firm rivals in the last 12 meetings, so the passionate fans have every right to be concerned over their Scottish Premiership title chances already.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement could regret sanctioning one summer exit as footage emerges.
