James Tavernier has reached a “point of no return” at Rangers and will be asking his agent to find him an Ibrox “escape route”, according to Mark Guidi.
The Light Blues captain was slammed by supporters following the Gers’ defeat to Celtic, with reports suggesting he would be open to a late transfer amid interest from Turkey and Qatar [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].
Although time is running out for the 32-year-old to find a new club, the Sunday Mail’s Guidi believes it would be best for the defender and his family’s sake if he were to leave Glasgow in the coming days.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (9 September, 1:11:15) he said: “I would imagine that James Tavernier in the wake of Sunday, the result and the aftermath that was aimed at him, I would imagine you’re on the phone to your agent or your advisor and saying find me an escape route.
“I think it’s reached that point anyway. I blame Philippe Clement for it because he shouldn’t be playing him, certainly not at right back because that’s been evident for a number of Old Firm games now.
“That’s on the manager, absolutely on the manager. The aftermath, sometimes you reach a point and I think it’s a point of no return for James Tavernier for his own sake and his family’s sake I think you try and get out.
“There’s a few days to try and make something happen.”

It did feel as though the Old Firm defeat at Parkhead was almost a turning point for both Rangers and Tavernier after a mixed start to the European and domestic season.

After a summer of speculation, the 32-year-old started the season in reasonable if unremarkable form under Clement, but that loss to the Hoops showed that there are still plenty of cracks in the defender’s game, especially out of possession.
Although Guidi believes Tavernier has now reached a point of no return, there is always a root back in football and there is still every chance that the Englishman will be a Gers player come the end of the transfer window.

If the Light Blues receive a good offer for their skipper in the coming days, they would have to seriously consider it, but they will also have to accept that they could lack a creative spark between now and January.
Clement, Tavernier and the decision-makers in Glasgow have some big calls to make.
