Rangers baffle with ‘crazy’ James Tavernier transfer decision amid Ibrox exit links
Cammy Bell admits that he has been left baffled by Rangers’ “crazy” James Tavernier transfer decision this season.
Reports suggest that the Light Blues are open to selling the Englishman this week amid transfer interest from clubs in both Qatar and Turkey as their transfer window remains open [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].
Although Clyde 1 pundit Bell admits that the 32-year-old’s time in Glasgow is coming to an end, he thinks Philippe Clement would live to regret sanctioning his sale with no replacement in place at Ibrox.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (9 September, 1:15:55) he said: “I really don’t want him to leave the club this week.
“I think he’s been a brilliant servant. Rangers as a team are having a tough time at the moment so let’s not just single out James Tavernier, it’s not just his fault and as a team, they’re not performing.
“Yes, he’s part of that and he’s captain so he will get a little bit more stick, he’s got to take some responsibility for that and he’s got to try and drive the team on as the manager has as well.
“It doesn’t sit comfortably with me that Rangers are going to let their captain go to another country where their window is still open and our window is closed. I just think that’s crazy. Why would you do that?
“You’re losing a top-quality player in your squad. Whether he’s performing at his top level at this moment in time is irrelevant, he could pick up form between now and January which could be so important for Rangers.

“Yes, his time might be coming to an end and they do need to look for a new right back, but there’s not one in the building that’s readymade at this moment in time.”
Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?
Even the most optimistic of Gers supporters would admit that time is running out for Tavernier in a Gers shirt, but that doesn’t mean that they should be pushing him out of the door in the next couple of weeks.
While his display at Parkhead was nowhere near good enough, he has shown already at times this season that he can be useful, particularly in games where Clement’s side has dominated possession of the ball.
If there was still time for the Light Blues to go out and sign a new right-back to replace the Englishman, then maybe selling him would make sense, but that is no longer the case.
Should a big-money offer arrive in the final days of the transfer window, maybe then the Gers could consider sanctioning his exit, but any deal has to be on incredibly favourable terms for Clement’s side.
It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
