Rangers are in line for a £14.4million windfall after the format of the Europa League was changed, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.
Philippe Clement’s side get their European campaign up and running with a trip to Malmo on Thursday (26 September) and are set to welcome Tottenham to Ibrox later in the revamped group stage.
While the money on offer in Europe’s second-tier competition is still nowhere near the riches of the Champions League, Plumley insists the Gers could still pocket up to £16.9million in prize money.
“It has increased slightly,” Plumley exclusively told Ibrox News.
“There are conservative estimates for Rangers here but if you look at the way the prize money is distributed and positioned, if you look at the group stage, the big league format, Rangers could potentially net around £14.4million to £16.9million.
“The top end of it is dependent on performances in that league because it is linked to wins, draws and picking up bonuses for on-pitch performance.
“But if you look at their position in the rankings at the minute against the other clubs that are in that competition, linked to the TV pot, if you look at the fixed fee for participation and Rangers’ place in that dynamic of clubs, conservatively they’re looking at £14.4million in prize money.
“It’s stretched at the top end to £16.9million if you can win some games and then of course you’ve got the additional ticket revenue for those home fixtures.

“As we’re talking, the sums on offer are still far greater in the Champions League, that’s kind of by the by.
“But the increase in windfall in the Europa League will benefit Rangers and if you can get through to the knockout stages you can generate more prize money further down the line.”

How much will Rangers earn in the Europa League?
Although the Gers would much rather have the financial boost on offer in the Champions League, £14.4million is nothing to be sniffed at and could help Clement’s side off and on the field.
The Light Blues have had to sell players to raise money for transfers in recent windows so while the Europa League prize money is unlikely to close the gap to Celtic, it will be useful in the long run at Ibrox.
