Chris Sutton says Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou has given critics ‘a stick to beat him with’
Tottenham Hotspur fans breathed a huge sigh of relief on Wednesday night as Spurs secured their place in the fourth round of the League Cup.
Ange Postecoglou’s charges were fresh off losing the North London derby and were on the brink of also losing to second-tier Coventry City.
Late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson turned the game around for Tottenham, keeping them in the picture for the League Cup.
Spurs haven’t had much to shout about on the silverware front for a while now, so there will be pressure on Postecoglou to end their 14-year trophy drought this season.
Last week, the Tottenham boss raised some eyebrows when he mentioned that he has “always” won trophies in his second season.
More specifically, he told Sky Sports, via BBC Sport: “I’ll correct myself – I don’t usually win things, I always win things in my second year. Nothing’s changed.”
Postecoglou went on to express bemusement at how his comments “upset a lot of people for some reason” as he merely “stated a fact”.
BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has now spoken about Postecoglou’s comments and suggested he has made a mistake.

While Sutton agrees they were taken out of context, he still feels the Spurs boss has given ammunition to his critics going forward.
“A lot has been made about Postecoglou talking about always winning a trophy in his second season,” he began on BBC Sport.
“I have heard what he said and it has been taken out of context. Now, no matter what he says about it, people are going to use it as a stick to beat him with.”

Postecoglou trophy record solid but wording was risky
Postecoglou’s career trophy-winning record is superb. UK fans will have seen him do it at Celtic, but he also did so in Japan and twice in Australia.
The Tottenham boss also did it with the national team in their second tournament, as well as two different junior Australian levels.
Furthermore, every team Postecoglou managed for more than nine months before moving on went on to win the league in their second season.
The issue people seem to have is with how he worded it. One thing is saying he has won trophies in the past, the other is suggesting this is a given that will happen this season too.
Considering Tottenham had two serial winners in the dugout – Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte – and neither could win anything with Spurs, Postecoglou should be wary of jinxing things.
