Kris Boyd hits out at what’s been said about Rangers skipper James Tavernier, ‘not right’
Kris Boyd has slammed those criticising James Tavernier whenever Rangers fail to win while always bringing up the captain’s future.
The former Gers striker appeared on Sky Sports News on Wednesday morning [25 September, 10:25am] and defended Tavernier from what he perceives to be criticism heading into unjust territory.
Skipper Tavernier is often in the spotlight having been at Ibrox for nine years, often fronting the blame, with recent criticism levelled at him as well as heavy departure links.
Boyd said: “James Tavernier’s future is always spoken about, a lot of which is not right.
“That is just what happens up here when Rangers lose a football game – Tavernier seems to get the blame and that’s not right.”
James Tavernier takes a lot of stick at Rangers
There are times when Tavernier deserves criticism – there have been plenty of occasions when he has been inconsistent or failed to inspire, including a large part of last season.
But there are also times when, as is the nature of an avidly supported club like Rangers, the blame is fronted by the right-back by virtue of his captaincy – as has always been the case both at Ibrox and elsewhere.
Former Gers midfielder Kevin Thomson suggested Tavernier would now rather go “under the radar” and relinquish the armband, paving the way for a teammate to step up to the plate.

Steven Gerrard initially handed Tavernier the responsibility back in 2018 and has since shown an interest in bringing the 32-year-old to Al-Ettifaq to strike a reunion in the Saudi Pro League [90min, 4 July].
For the sake of the player himself, to lift another trophy would be most welcome given the torrent of misfortune suffered by the players, club and fans of late.
