Rangers baffle over Lennon Miller signing as secret Celtic deal feared for Motherwell sensation
Lennon Miller would go straight into Philippe Clement’s midfield says Derek Ferguson, who is baffled why Rangers haven’t tried to sign him already.
The former Gers midfielder is worried that Celtic might have tied a deal up in secret as he asked why the Light Blues haven’t moved for the Motherwell star on Open Goal on 26 September.
Rangers were scouting the 18-year-old in preseason [Football Scotland, 10 July] but don’t appear to have advanced from there, while James McFadden and Gordon Dalziel believe he is more than good enough and is worth a multimillion pound fee to Fir Park now.
Ferguson said (1h 2m): “I don’t know, have Celtic got him? Have Celtic got something behind the scenes?”
“You’re looking a wee bit worried there,” joked James McFadden.
Ferguson replied: “Aye because I’m thinking why did we no [go for him]? He looks an athlete, big, strong.”
McFadden added: “Next year, £4m-£5m, don’t even think about anything less.”
Dalziel responded: “£4m or £5m? Oh I’d be looking for a lot more than that. I think he’s got the potential to be a top, top player.”

Si Ferry asked if the teenager would play in Rangers’ midfield now and both Ferguson and McFadden insisted he would, with the latter saying: “Aye, Connor Barron’s went in and been one of the best players for Rangers.”
He later added: “His understanding of the game’s ridiculous”.
Rangers move called for after Connor Barron signing
After Miller stepped up to score a stoppage time penalty to send his side through in the League Cup win over Dundee United a week ago (20 September) it looks like his asking price is only going to increase this season.
Interest in him will also grow, and potentially from outside the Scottish Premiership, so if Rangers do have any designs on adding a second talented young Scot to their midfield after Barron the window of opportunity may be closing.
John Gilligan has confirmed that Clement will have money to spend in the January transfer window [Sky Sports Scotland, 24 September] but whether there will be enough to convince the Well to agree to let their star talent leave is another matter.
Ferguson has previously called for the Light Blues to agree a move and to loan the teenager straight back to Stuart Kettlewell to continue his impressive development, which might be the best route.
Although Barron has been a valuable pick up since he left Pittodrie, and Mohamed Diomande continues to show flashes of being a quality player, there will be plenty who believe Miller has the talent to be better than both.
Clement’s squad is not overflowing with stars currently despite a recent uplift in form so the Fir Park man would probably add plenty if he was brought straight in.
But whether it is Celtic who are the greatest threat to beat the Gers to the punch, or even a club in England, the opportunity, if there is one, won’t stay open forever.
