Rangers news: Keith Wyness reveals the truth about new double-your-money deal
Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has suggested the new front-of-shirt sponsor deal at Rangers is not as impressive as it seems.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted it is “crucial” for the Gers to increase commercial revenue but urged fans not to “get carried away”.
Football Insider revealed last week (19 September) that Rangers could see their commercial revenue increase to around £30million next season.
The Glasgow side confirmed on 18 September they have agreed an extension with the Kindred Group for the Unibet brand to continue as the club’s front-of-shirt sponsor beyond this season.
Kindred’s Rangers deal is believed to be worth around £1.5million per year – and they could bank up to £3million from the new deal depending on their on-pitch performance.

By contrast, Man City’s deal with Etihad Airways is reportedly worth £67.5million per season.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “It’s crucial they increase the commercial revenue, but let’s not get carried away with this deal.
“I always worry when clubs give a percentage increase rather than giving the numbers.

“It normally means the number isn’t that big. We’re looking at something which is a £3million transaction.
“It’s important for Rangers to increase the revenue, but it isn’t the same as taking it up to £40million or beyond.
“Let’s be clear about the scale we’re looking at. Every pound has to be a prisoner at Rangers at the moment.”
