Rangers made contact to sign English goalkeeper as behind-the-scenes news emerges
Joe Lewis admits that Rangers made contact to secure his services back in 2019 after he had already given his word to Aberdeen.
Having officially retired from the game, the 37-year-old former English goalkeeper admitted that he found it flattering given the fact that Gers are a big name.
However, he had verbally agreed on an extension with Aberdeen and did not want to go back on his word.
Lewis said, as quoted by the Daily Record: “We played Rangers away and we lost 2-0 at Ibrox. I had a really good game. Rangers made contact with a few people after that game and so I was aware of their interest. They had asked a few questions and knew I was into the last year of my contract. I had verbally agreed to an extension with Aberdeen and I wasn’t going to go back on that. Rangers are a big club but I wouldn’t have felt comfortable going to there from Aberdeen.
“It wouldn’t have felt right and also I had verbally agreed a new deal with Aberdeen. I also didn’t want to impact my standing at Aberdeen or to cut ties with people and supporters who I had become friends with. Yes, the interest was flattering and the money would have been great, I’m sure.”
Joe Lewis would’ve been a stellar signing for Rangers
Had Gers managed to sign Lewis in 2019, it could have represented a significant upgrade in their goalkeeping department.
The Englishman, known for his leadership and shot-stopping abilities, had already proven himself at Aberdeen, where he was not only a mainstay but also a captain, demonstrating his command and influence on the pitch.
His experience in Scottish football would have been invaluable, potentially providing stability and expertise to a Rangers side aiming to challenge for titles. Lewis’ presence might have accelerated the growth under Steven Gerrard, offering a more seasoned option in goal compared to what was available at the time.

However, despite all the efforts taken by the Ibrox outfit, Lewis remained at Aberdeen and never got to test himself between the sticks at Rangers.

Fans too would’ve been supportive of this signing as it would’ve been an important step taken to strengthen the first team and Gerrard might still regret not signing him.
