Rangers hero who forced £600k exit this summer takes veiled Philippe Clement swipe
By the time Todd Cantwell left Rangers, there wasn’t a fan left inside Ibr—, sorry Hampden, who was sad to see the playmaker go.
The once highly-rated 26-year-old had made a solid impression when he joined Rangers in the January of 2023 but over 18 months was often more drama than he was worth.
Between public spats with Philippe Clement and social media nonsense, Todd Cantwell cut his ties with the Rangers support when he handed in a transfer request in the summer.
But as the midfielder begins to make an impression with Blackburn Rovers, the role of Philippe Clement in Cantwell’s exit is subject to increasing scrutiny.

Philippe Clement and Todd Cantwell clash
Todd Cantwell and Philippe Clement’s frayed relationship started against Aris Limassol when the Rangers manager hooked the midfielder in the first half of a Europa League clash at Ibrox last November.
Cantwell, who has plenty of ability, stood accused of not carrying out the Belgian’s instructions and ultimately not pulling in the same direction as the team.
For a player with the ego and talent of Cantwell, this was clearly an initial red flag.
Rangers aren’t the first club Cantwell has kicked up a stink – the Englishman has done similar at Norwich City and Bournemouth – and with Clement just in the door the Rangers manager got the benefit of the doubt.

Fast forward eight months and Cantwell was being huckled out the door at Auchenhowie for an ambitious Blackburn Rovers team who struck a cut-price £600k deal to sign the player.
Cantwell is settling into Blackburn quite nicely – the upper half of the English Championship probably the midfielder’s level – and was hailed by manager John Eustace earlier in the season.
And now it’s the ex-Rangers midfielder’s turn to talk up Eustace, in a glowing riposte where it is really quite simple to read between the lines.
Todd Cantwell took aim at being played out of position previously and, rather obviously, was making an open comparison with his time at Rangers.

“In terms of managers that I’ve had so far, he’s the most relatable,” Cantwell told the Sun.
“I say that because when I hear him speak it makes sense all the time.
“When I spoke to him, we had complete clarity on the two positions that I could bring the best version of myself in.
“They are positions I’ve played in since I’ve been here so far, the number 10 and left-winger.
“The way the manager wants a left winger is very similar to how Daniel Farke wanted me at Norwich.
“I’ve had three seasons in the Championship and I’ve got out of it every time, so I’ve been on the end of success.
“Behind closed doors I always think I can get the best out of people, so hopefully my experience is dripping off me.”
