Connor Barron deserved red card for Rangers for ‘identical’ offence as Celtic man – Ex-referees
Connor Barron should have been sent off for Rangers in the 2-1 victory over St Mirren for a high boot, according to Behind The Whistles.
The account of the podcast hosted by former SFA referees Steve Conroy and Des Roache responded to a question via X on 28 October to agree the Gers midfielder’s challenge on Toyosi Olusanya at Ibrox the previous day was “identical” to the one which saw Celtic’s Yang Hyun-jun red carded against Hearts last season.
Barron stayed on the pitch and Philippe Clement’s side closed out a nervy victory but the two former officials suggested it was an incident that should be covered by referees chief Willie Collum.
Behind The Whistles wrote: “Identical “tackles” & should have received identical sanctions. We said Yang was right to be sent off, so Barron should also have been sent off. We will look out for this on Wullie’s next KPI release [sic]”.
Philippe Clement’s Rangers squeak past St Mirren
The Light Blues rode their luck in more ways than one on their return to Scottish Premiership action after the morale-boosting 4-0 win over FCSB in the Europa League on 24 October.
Not only was the overall performance fairly dreadful for most of the afternoon but they got the rub of the green on a couple of officiating decisions, as a potential penalty shout for a Neraysho Kasanwirjo challenge on Olusanya was also dismissed.
Although Clement’s men improved slightly after the break it was touch and go for them to come out of the game with a victory either way, with virtually every player’s levels dropping significantly from the European win, and Robin Propper having a nightmare at the back.
Hoops fans will no doubt point to the lack of a red card for Barron as evidence of bias, but if Rangers can’t improved their form domestically then it is hardly going to matter.

Clement’s job looks to be safe for the foreseeable future as things stand, despite being six points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen heading into the midweek fixtures.
Another bad result on the road at Pittodrie on 30 October, following the dismal 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock a week ago, and the pressure will surely mount once more.
That trip to face the Dons has been highlighted by the likes of Michael Stewart [Premier Sports, 21 October] and Scott Allan [PLZ Soccer, 23 October] as a key one that could force decisions to be made.
But while it is thought that a sacking would be financially doable at Ibrox [PLZ Soccer, 21 October], it doesn’t seem like there is much of an appetite for it currently.
