‘Close to a toe poke’ Leeds United star’s goal admission as Wayne Rooney’s tactics fail

Leeds United goalscorer Daniel James has admitted it was frustrating for his side against Plymouth Argyle to play against a team who had no desire of going forward at all. Wayne Rooney set his side set up to try and survive for 90 minutes with as many men behind the ball as possible and for a short while at least, it worked.
Ultimately Leeds broke down their visitors and ended the first half with a commanding three-goal lead. It should have been built upon after the break, but despite needing goals Plymouth’s intent appeared to remain as a conservative approach continued.
“In the first half it was basically a back six and it was just about staying patient,” said James, speaking to LUTV. “It was obviously frustrating.

“Every time the ball went out of play they were slowing it down and you can get frustrated as a player. But it was just about when we did have the ball we had to make the most of it and I thought we played around the block very well, created a lot of chances and I thought we could have scored a lot more.”

Leeds certainly could have added to their total but will be delighted to see James return to the scoresheet, alongside Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson. For James it was a second goal of the season after his first away at Sheffield Wednesday back in August. James has almost played as many games as months have passed since his first goal of the campaign, with only three appearances since then before yesterday’s Elland Road clash with Argyle.
Delighted to score again, he revealed how the strike wasn’t exactly how he’d have planned it. James added; “I had a corner before and there was always that space. Willy played it and it nearly ended up in a counter attack for them.
“But the next time he played it, it was on the ground, maybe my touch wasn’t so great so I couldn’t get a proper strike. I didn’t quite toe poke it but it was at the end of my stride! It definitely wasn’t a toe poke, But it was close to a toe poke!”
