Celtic’s Champions League rivals KO’d by double injury blow as Bundesliga boss eyes hat-trick of Parkhead wins

RB Leipzig star man Xavi Simons will miss tonight’s Champions League showdown with Celtic at Parkhead after undergoing minor ankle surgery while first-choice goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi is also a doubt after hurting his ankle.
On-loan PSG attacker Simons – who has three goals and two assists in 11 games – went down in severe discomfort during last month’s Champions League defeat at home to Liverpool after tangling with Andy Robertson in the closing stages. The Netherlands international had to be carried off the pitch with the Bundesliga high-flyers later confirming a ligament issue which will rule out until the turn of the year.
Simons absence for the trip to Glasgow has been described as a “bitter blow” by manager Marco Rose, but veteran Hungarian stopper Gulacsi’s injury setback was deemed less serious after he was forced off during Leipzig’s recent 3-1 league win over Freiburg with Rose commenting “he wanted to play on but couldn’t.”

Rose believes Celtic will be on a revenge mission as he seeks a hat-trick of wins at Parkhead. The 48-year-old made a victorious visit to Glasgow’s East End two years ago when leading the Germans to a 2-0 win over Ange Postecoglou’s hosts. Rose was also in charge of RB Salzburg six years ago when they defeated Brendan Rodgers’ side in the Europa League.
The experienced coach – who also won the corresponding home games – memorably celebrated the 2018 victory for the Austrians by sporting a green and white hoops scarf and knows the Celtic fans won’t want to see him jubilant again this evening.
“Of course! I always like coming here,” Rose said with a wry smile on his face. “I like the history of the club, I appreciate fan culture a lot. I remember my first match here with Salzburg very well, the supporters accepted and honoured the result. I actually had some contact with a few, they offered me a scarf. This creates a connection and I also like their manager.
“The fans here mean you need to be ready if you want to win. It’ll be a great atmosphere. We’ll have to defend all they give us but I’m sure we’ll get our chances an, when we go, we have to take them. With the support of their fans, they’ll be a big challenge. We need a big performance.”
