The Magpies reportedly targeted the winger late in the summer transfer window. Sky Sports went as far as to suggest that Newcastle’s offer could have risen to around £50million.
That would have been a sizable profit on the £15million paid to Manchester United a year earlier. Elanga famously put Newcastle to the sword at St James’ Park last season, with two assists terrorising Eddie Howe’s men in an unlikely Boxing Day win.

He is yet to hit the heights this season despite Forest’s positive start to the campaign. Just one assist and zero goals from 10 goals has done little to help the Tricky Trees into third place.
It remains to be seen whether the Magpies will renew their interest in the January transfer window. He is, however, expected to start against Newcastle at the City Ground tomorrow.

Forest boss Nuno backed Elanga to cause a “threat” as Forest aim for their sixth Premier League win of the season. He told reporters: “I think he is doing well. In the last game, he was huge for us. He is taking on more responsibility than he had before. When James (Ward-Prowse) is not on the pitch, he is our set-piece taker.
“He is putting a lot of effort into that and it is another responsibility we have given to him. He is doing well. We know the threat he has. The threat that he has is natural. He is providing good situations.”
Nuno also gasped when asked about where Newcastle’s qualities lie. He added: “All over the place (where Newcastle’s strengths are). They are a very good team with a very good squad. Immense quality, (with a) very good manager. (It will be) a tough match.”
