Kevin Muscat details ‘conversations’ that suggest Rangers board dithered on manager call
Rangers decision making over the last few years has left a lot to be desired at board room level.
No contingency plans have left the club without four key executive roles which also means that Philippe Clement can’t be sacked as manager.
The managerial appointments since Steven Gerrard left for Aston Villa have also suggested a lack of planning with each having different philosophies and styles of play, a concept that Rangers have yet to fully get on board with.

Kevin Muscat hints at Rangers board lack of conviction
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, however, after the base that Gerrard built and the squad that was in place, the appointment of Kevin Muscat after the title winning boss, probably would have been the best decision.
Speaking to A Leagues after winning the Chinese Super League, Muscat hinted that not every club he has spoken to in recent years has bought into how he operates and how he sets his teams up, which includes Rangers:
“I was really happy because I had one or two private discussions with different parties towards the end of last season and in discussions, people actually from clubs said that ‘Well, that really can’t work here and how do you know that can work here, your methods?” Muscat said on his delight at winning the Chinese title.
“When I finished those conversations, I was like you know what? Maybe this is not for me, because they’ve not followed me enough to to actually stick their neck out.
“Whereas here, the sports director Mr (Xiang) Sun, he’s one of the first two Chinese players to play in Europe. It was the complete opposite. I want you to come out here and do what you’ve done in Shanghai. I want you to build it your way.”

Rangers continue to drift without proper football structure
If the procession of managers after Gerrard confirms one thing at Rangers, it is that the need for a football-minded CEO and sporting director is paramount.
There needs to be a structure throughout Rangers from the Under-10s straight through to the first team.
A club wide philosophy so that players can be bought, developed and replaced at any age with a set profile for their position.
What this means is that any player progressing from the academy should be able to walk into the first team without the need for a period of adjustment – the game plan should be the same.
It also means, that if a player like Calvin Bassey is sold, that his replacement has already been identified and this strategy should be replicated throughout the club.
Changing managers shouldn’t mean playing squads and tactics being ripped up and rebuilt.
Rangers needed to rebuild this summer, the only question is, do they have the right builders?
