Daniel Farke set to make £12m Joel Piroe mistake at Leeds United after what Graham Smyth said
Daniel Farke would be making a mistake at Leeds United if he sold Joel Piroe for £12million in the January or summer transfer window.
There have been times this season when the Dutchman has been displaced from the first-team by youngster Mateo Joseph but the Spaniard has shown on more than one occasion this term that he’s not quite ready to lead the Whites’ attacking line.
It’s undeniable that he has plenty of talent but it feels like he’s still too raw to be the West Yorkshire outfit’s main striker, especially if they gain promotion.
Speaking on the Inside Elland Road Podcast (14 November, 39:31) Smyth shared his verdict on the possibility of Farke sanctioning the sale of Piroe for a big-money bid.
“Like we saw with [Glen] Kamara, Leeds saw an opportunity there to sell a player who they signed for £5million, a perfectly good player in the Championship but they thought they could augment the midfield with a different profile and they saw an opportunity to make money,” he said.

“And there was no sentiment whatsoever in that situation, it was ‘yeah, we can do better; we’re getting more money here, let’s pull the trigger on this’. I could possibly see that being the case with Piroe as well.

“If a Championship club is saying ‘hang on a minute, we play two up top, he’s going to get 15, 20 goals and he could shoot us to promotion, let’s go and spend £12million on him’. You know, a relegated side perhaps, 12 or 13 million [pound].
“If you were Leeds and you looked at that – it’s going to be difficult to turn down.”
Why selling Joel Piroe be a mistake for Leeds United
Of course, as with most players, there have been times when Piroe’s performances have left a lot to be desired but more often than not this term, he’s shown up.
Joseph and Piroe have been interchanging their starting role for the vast majority of the season due to the consistent absence of Patrick Bamford this term.
Both have their positives but on paper, it feels like Piroe is the stronger striker despite the potential Joseph has.

The Dutchman has been in and around the English leagues for some time now and if the Whites went into the summer transfer window with just Bamford and Joseph up top, it’s likely that fans would feel rather uncomfortable.
Granted, Farke would likely target a striker as a priority but if they can keep Piroe within their ranks, a number nine wouldn’t be as much of a priority and would allow Farke to bolster other areas of his team instead.
This is all speculation of course but the fact that the sale of the Dutchman is being brought up should set alarm bells ringing in the heads of all of Leeds’ fans.
