Tam McManus blasts ‘Incredible’ Nils Koppen development at Rangers
Tam McManus has blasted Rangers for promoting Nils Koppen to the role of technical director.
The former Gers sporting director now has two roles to fulfil until John Gilligan can find suitable hires for the other behind-the-scenes areas within the club that still need to be filled.
Speaking on the PLZ Soccer Show (29 November), pundit McManus shared how he thinks Rangers’ fans will be feeling about the news.
“If you’re a Rangers fan, I think you’re slightly disappointed in this appointment, it reeks of a cheap appointment it reeks of just giving somebody who’s already there more responsibility,” he said.
“It’s not as if the players he’s helped bring in over the summer have been brilliant, he’s now getting an even bigger responsibility within the club, I’m not sure about this one, I think Rangers supporters would have wanted somebody fresh.
“I don’t know the guy, I don’t know how he works but if you’re looking in as a Rangers supporter, you’re thinking we’ve tools he cheap option again.
Later in the podcast, McManus revisited the topic and went into further detail as to why he thinks the move was a bad one to make.
“I think it’s massive [the technical director role] you know if you’re director, you’ve got a say on the players who are coming in, you’ve got a say in how the team plays, you know it’s a big big responsibility, a big role,” he added.

“It’s mostly recruitment and he’s there, his record is mixed at best since he’s been there and it’s incredible the faith that the Rangers board have shown in him to give him a bigger role”.
Nils Koppen has a lot of work to do at Rangers in January
The fact that Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership says all you need to know about how well their season has gone thus far.
Philippe Clement’s men are currently nine points adrift of both first and second place in the league and have shown no signs of how they’re going to make the points up.
Both times they’ve faced their title rivals this term have ended in embarrassment as they lost both clashes which further outlines how poor they’ve been.
It’s not for a lack of trying, however, as many new arrivals were brought through the Ibrox welcome doors in summer but most just haven’t hit the ground running.

This has left Rangers in something of a pickle regarding which areas they need to target in January. The fact that they have little resources to play with also likely doesn’t help matters much.
If Koppen wants to get off with a good start in his new role, he’s going to have to work some magic in January and unearth a hidden gem to try and save the Ibrox outfit’s season.
In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement’s job could now be safe thanks to Nils Koppens’ promotion.
