‘Outstanding’ manager Rangers legend wanted at Ibrox could soon be off the market
Rangers recruited Graeme Souness in their hunt for a new manager because the Ibrox hierarchy were determined to get the appointment right.
But whilst the rest of the Rangers footballing board eventually settled on Philippe Clement, Souness’s attentions were focused in a different direction.
With the pressure rising on Clement after a challenging start to the Scottish Premiership season, the Rangers support is split over what happens next.
But a year on from big Phil’s appointment, the preferred candidate of Graeme Souness looks set to complete a move to the English Championship.

Philippe Clement one of three Rangers manager candidates
Rangers might’ve finally appointed Philippe Clement to replace Michael Beale at Ibrox but it’s no secret there were other contenders for the job.
As the conversation swirls surrounding Clement the length and breadth of Paisley Road West, two of the other options primed to take the Rangers manager’s gig have experienced different fates.
Firstly, Shanghai Port manager Kevin Muscat blew the Chinese Super League away at the first-time of asking.
The Australian – who spent a season at Rangers in 02/03 – was a leading contender for the Rangers job with Muscat even hinting at doubts surrounding his style of play at Ibrox.

The other contender – and the one Graeme Souness wanted in at Rangers – is none other than Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard.
Enjoying mixed success with Derby County, Everton and Chelsea, Souness reckoned Lampard quite simply would understand the role of Rangers manager more.
“There were two outstanding candidates, Frank and Philippe, who got the job,” Souness told TalkSPORT.
“The final say was not with me. For me, Frank had the edge because of this. Frank has a great deal to offer in terms of management.
“The thing that encouraged me about Frank when I met him is that he wanted to do it, he doesn’t need the money, he wants to be a football manager, a successful football manager and he fancied the Rangers job.”
Now, one year on from the links to Rangers, Frank Lampard finally looks set to land another top job with this perhaps the 46-year-old’s last chance to prove himself on the touchline.
Frank Lampard in ‘advanced’ Coventry City talks
Frank Lampard is reportedly closing in on a deal which would see him move to English Championship outfit Coventry City.
The Sky Blues are on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Mark Robins and, according to Sky Sports, Lampard is now in ‘advanced talks’ to takeover at the Ricoh Arena.
This latest news comes after Lampard was linked to the Coventry gig earlier in the month.
With Coventry 17th in the Championship, Frank Lampard’s first task will be getting the former Premier League club out of a relegation dogfight.
The next will be getting Coventry back to the Premier League for the first time since 2001.
Rangers fans will have one eye on how Lampard does if an agreement is reached and the Blues legend takes over at Coventry.
It will also be the first time Lampard has secured a top job since an interim stint at Chelsea in April 2023.
The news also comes at an interesting juncture for the current Gers boss, with Philippe Clement strongly linked with the Belgium manager’s job.
The jury is still out on the Rangers manager despite Clement repeatedly claiming that he is fully-committed to the job at Ibrox.
But should Domenico Tedesco lose his job in Brussels, would the offer of leading his country be a pull that’s too strong for the ex-Club Brugge manager?
If it does, then Frank Lampard looks set to be off the market when it comes to a potential replacement.
