Scott Wright enjoyed the dream debut to help Birmingham City beat Wigan Athletic late in the day on Saturday – but George Hall was denied his maiden Walsall appearance by a bizarre rule.
Whilst Wright was lashing home a left-footed shot at the Tilton to send St Andrew’s into raptures, Hall was watching Walsall hold on to a 2-1 victory over Cheltenham Town in League Two from the bench.
Hall would likely have made his debut for the Saddlers but for a slice of bad luck. Walsall had to replace three players through injury before the 47th minute at the Bescot Stadium. Josh Gordon, Oisin McEntee and Liam Gordon all suffered injuries and had to be withdrawn.
EFL clubs are permitted five substitutes but Walsall boss Mat Sadler – formerly of Blues – couldn’t bring on any more replacements having stopped the game three times to make changes. Sadler wouldn’t have even been able to make a change in the event of a fourth injury.

The rules state: “Each club is only permitted a maximum of three opportunities to make substitutions during the fixture, plus an opportunity at half-time, and a club may make more than the one substitution at each of these opportunities.”
Sadler would only have been permitted another substitution if one of his Walsall players had sustained a head injury. Clubs are allowed an extra swap if a player suffers concussion.
Hall isn’t expected to feature for Walsall against Blues in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday, meaning his Saddlers debut should come against MK Dons on Saturday.
