Chris Sutton reacts as Todd Cantwell makes new Rangers exit admission
Chris Sutton has shared his immediate reaction after Todd Cantwell made a new admission about his deadline day transfer away from Rangers.
The English midfielder completed a reported £500,000 move to Blackburn Rovers in the final hours of the transfer window after Philippe Clement confirmed he had submitted a transfer request [Alan Nixon, 28 August].
Cantwell has insisted that he wasn’t kicked out of the door and that he never asked not to play for the Gers [Sky Sports, 5 September], but Sutton has questioned whether or not his time in Glasgow has been misinterpreted.
Writing on X on Thursday (5 September) he said: “Excellent questions from Andy Bayes.
“Was there a misconception about Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers?”
How much did Rangers get for Todd Cantwell transfer from Blackburn Rovers?
Cantwell has done very little to build bridges with the Gers’ support over the last few months and his comments after his last-minute transfer are only likely to further increase tensions between the two parties.
The attacking midfielder seems insistent that he never asked not to be picked by Clement, but he has never once suggested that he didn’t submit a request to leave Ibrox during the summer transfer window.

Clement’s side may well be lacking a bit of quality in that number 10 role after Cantwell’s exit, but the general consensus is that they could well be better off without the Englishman given his disruptive presence on and off the field.

Hopefully, Rangers’ new signings in the final hours of the transfer window will fill the void left by the Cantwell and the only players who departed Ibrox.
It is clear that some fresh legs were always going to be required for the Light Blues to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the table.
Supporters will likely keep an eye on Cantwell’s career at Ewood Park, but there will be very few fans and pundits pining for him to return to Ibrox.
In other Rangers news, the Light Blues have been told that Clement “needs help” after recent developments at Ibrox
