James Tavernier exit to make Rangers ‘weaker’ after Ibrox transfer developments
Rangers “would be weaker” if they allow James Tavernier to exit Ibrox amid growing transfer speculation, according to Peter Grant.
Reports suggest the Gers are ready to accept offers for the 32-year-old amid interest from clubs in both Turkey and Qatar despite rejecting approaches for his signature earlier this summer [Graeme Bailey, 6 September].
While some pundits and supporters have urged Philippe Clement’s side to let the defender leave, Go Radio pundit Peter Grant has suggested that his sale would have a negative impact on the side.
Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (6 September, 45:45) he said: “Yes they would be weaker.
“Yes, they would be weaker because he scores goals, he takes responsibility from set plays, he creates chances with his crosses but he’s having a hard time because he’s not got good defenders.
“He’s not a good defender.”

Rangers supporters will almost certainly be divided when it comes to Tavernier’s position at Ibrox. While some will still argue that he has a lot to offer in possession, others will suggest his defensive frailties have become too big a concern.
The 32-year-old has never been a particularly good defender, but over the last couple of years, it has seemed as though he has become worse and worse out of possession, particularly against Celtic where he has been torn apart by Daizen Maeda.

Undoubtedly, the Gers skipper is costing Clement’s side points with his poor positioning without the ball, however, he has repeatedly carried the Light Blues on his back when times have been tough in the past.

In Dujon Sterling, Rangers do appear to have a readymade replacement to slot in at right-back if Tavernier does depart Ibrox in the final days of the window and at the moment, the former Chelsea man doesn’t exactly feel like a step backwards.
Grant would be right to suggest that going forward, Tavernier’s exit may weaken the Gers but it would likely only benefit them defensively.
