Newcastle United club captain Jamaal Lascelles has returned to action following 13 months out injured.
The 31-year-old was an unused substitute in the Magpies’ 2-0 win over Chelsea on Sunday in what was his first inclusion in the matchday squad since sustaining an ACL injury in March last yearSven Botman suffered the same injury around a similar time but returned to action in 10 months. However, Lascelles’ recovery has been a little more complex having suffered numerous setbacks.Lascelles has gradually resumed first-team training in recent weeks and has now taken another major step in his recovery by playing his first minutes on Tuesday afternoon. The Derby-born defender played the first half as the under-21s played out a 1-1 draw with Celtic B at Newcastle’s training ground.Lascelles lined up alongside the likes of Leo Shahar, Cathal Heffernan, Alfie Harrison, Trevan Sanusi and Sean Neave before nine changes were made at half-time. Garang Kuol, Jay Turner-Cooke and Ben Parkinson were among the players introduced.
January signings Kyle Fitzgerald and Baran Yildiz, who joined from Galway United and Genclerbirligi respectively, also made their appearances for the under-21s having represented the under-18s during the second-half of the season.
