The merits of keeping Junior Firpo at Elland Road have been discussed at length ever since Leeds United secured their Premier League return.
Firpo has thrived under Daniel Farke in the Championship but struggled when the Whites last competed in the top flight. Opponents often targeted his flank and exposed Firpo’s defensive shortcomings. But Firpo, who has been included in the Dominican Republic’s 23-man squad for next month’s World Cup qualifiers and 2026 Gold Cup tournament, starred in United’s title-winning season. He nailed down the left-back berth, contributing four goals and 10 assists in 32 league appearances. United remain in talks with Firpo over a new contract. His current deal runs out at the end of next month. AC Milan, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Lazio are all said to be big admirers of the attack-minded full-back. Clubs will be able to trade again from June 1 when the transfer market reopens.
Former Whites defender Aidy White, a regular pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, told The Square Ball podcast: “He [Firpo] has played a pivotal part so he deserves another contract. But it is the question of whether that is, if he’s enough.
“My opinion is that he’s excellent going forward but I still question his defensive attributes. In the Premier League, we won’t have control. For me, has he got the one-on-one quality and that defensive awareness?
Leeds United have been linked with a summer swoop for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher but will face tough competition for his signature.

Another player United are in contract talks with is Sam Byram, who has already made it clear he would like to prolong his Elland Road stay. “Sam has been a great servant. If we go out and find a replacement, how much is that going to cost? Are they as capable as Sam? I can’t imagine someone coming in and taking Bogle’s place from the off.
“So having Byram – similar to what [Josuha] Guilavogui has done and take a step back from playing – for me, I’d give him a contract and say look Sam, this is the situation – you aren’t going to play much.”
White added: “He [Byram] might want to go and play football but when you have that affinity with the club, you take that role on. He fits the bill; it is a no-brainer.”
