Mark Pope would like to see a couple rule changes to the men’s side of college hoops
“We’re the only remaining basketball entity that has halves.”
We all love college basketball. We live and breathe it. But for all the love we give it, it does have its faults and stick-in-its-way rules.
Whether it be an inconsistent block/charge, what is a cylinder foul(?), or even why do they review goaltending calls at the next dead ball instead of stopping play immediately? Coach Mark Pope would like to see a few changes to the college game, but not what you might think.
On The Sideline with Andy Katz, Coach Pope said that converting the men’s game from halves to quarters is one that he would be open for — “(Men’s college basketball is) the only…not even the women…we’re the only remaining basketball entity that has halves.”
Another one that Pope would like to see changed is advancing the ball to half-court out of a timeout.
“The change that I would really like to make, that I’d be super excited about? I’d like to be able to advance the ball out of timeouts,” Pope said. “I know it slows down the game, but it makes the game so much more interesting when, with 2.5 seconds or 1.5 seconds left, if you don’t have to go full-court, but you can advance it. You have a chance to get elite-level shots and decision-making.”
Both rule changes he is in favor of are already in place in the NBA, so it makes sense to transition them to the college game.
