Fabrizio Romano: ‘Unbelievable’ Leeds Star Approached by Euro Giants
Leeds United have another hurdle to jump over in their bid to keep left-back Junior Firpo at the club – with French giants Lyon having made a proposal to the former Barcelona star to land him on a free transfer, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Firpo’s excellent season at Elland Road saw Leeds win the Championship with 100 points, marking a return to the Premier League at the second time of asking – but despite the celebrations in west Yorkshire, it could also spell the end of his tenure at the club, with clubs on the continent keen on securing his services.
Firpo has been linked with a return to Real Betis, as well as other clubs such as AC Milan being touted. But Romano has revealed that Lyon have now ‘made a proposal’ for the ‘unbelievable’ star, and they are pushing to make a deal happen in what would be a blow to Leeds’ preparations for the top-flight.
Four goals and 10 assists in the Championship saw him finish top of the assists tables for a defender, and in sixth-place overall – and at the age of 28, he could be set for his final big move with some European heavyweights in the hunt for his signature.
Firpo already has 62 La Liga appearances for both Real Betis and Barcelona, as well as 10 Champions League appearances – and with 11 caps for the Dominican Republic, his extensive experience would be sorely missed at Leeds.
Daniel Farke has yet to add anyone to his squad, despite links to stars such as Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher, Sheffield United metronome Gustavo Hamer – who is set to be available after the Blades missed out on promotion – and Rennes striker Arnaud Kalimuendo. However, losing their star full-back means that the supposed £100million budget that owners 49ers Enterprises have set aside will have to be dipped into to replace Firpo.
Liverpool man Kostas Tsimikas has been touted for a move given that the Reds are thought to be closing in on the signing of Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez – and that could push an exit for Firpo closer to completion.
