Rangers shareholders backed to hold Dave King talks as £50m Ibrox investment mooted
Rangers shareholders would be willing to listen to Dave King if he brought £50million of investment to Ibrox, according to Andy Halliday.
The Light Blues interim chairman John Gilligan has suggested that nobody on the Gers’ board is yet to speak to King, who has suggested he would be interested in returning to Glasgow as chairman [David Edgar, 23 September].
Although Clyde 1 pundit Halliday believes Gilligan was right to ask King to stop his public criticism, he doesn’t believe the interim chairman has “banished” the idea of the two parties holding talks.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on Monday (23 September) he said: “My understanding is that John Gilligan has asked Dave King to stop the public criticism, which I completely agree with.
“Listen, John Gilligan used the words under the radar. If Dave King brought £50million worth of investments to John Gilligan under-the-radar, every shareholder at Rangers football club would sit and listen to what he’s got to say.
“I don’t think he’s banishing any potential talks with Dave King or any potential investment, but the public criticism is helping no one.”

Gilligan may well have called on King to stop his public slamming of the current Rangers board, but that doesn’t mean that the Light Blues are completely against the idea of holding talks with the South African-based businessman.
There is an acceptance on the blue half of Glasgow that money and funding are needed to close the gap to Celtic both off and on the field and the Gers board will know that outside investment is required sooner rather than later.

While King has suggested that he could help the Gers find that investment if he were to take on a more prominent role [Rangers Review, 15 September], there has been little evidence so far that he can actually deliver on that promise.
As Halliday suggests, the door has not been completely closed on King. Gilligan’s comments are completely understandable given the fragile position that the Light Blues have found themselves in currently.
