Rangers have obvious Dessers transfer decision as Boyd speaks out

Rangers star Cyriel Dessers continues to be linked with an exit this summer.

The Nigerian forward notched 18 goals and two assists in 35 Scottish Premiership matches this season but that is not enough to convince some observers.

The 30-year-old has constantly been the subject of interest, with the latest coming from the Greek side AEK Athens, who are willing to spend big money on him.

Boyd urges Rangers to keep hold of Dessers

An Ibrox exit seems like a very realistic option for Dessers but former Gers striker Kris Boyd has urged his ex-club to keep him.

The Sky Sports pundit is hoping that new manager Russell Martin ignores the critics and makes the Nigeria international a key part of his team.

Speaking to the Scottish Daily Mail (10 June), he said: “People speak about Dessers, but to score the amount of goals that he scored is impressive.

“You’ve got others in there like Danilo at £5.5million. He’s hardly played. You’d be looking for more. Hamza Igamane’s form is up and down.

“But the one who is continuously there, scoring goals week in, week out, and has missed a couple of chances, he’s the one that’s been criticised.

“The other ones who have not contributed to anything seem to get away with it.

“Would I hang on to him? One hundred per cent. Everybody tells you scoring goals is the hardest thing in the game. You’ve got somebody there who’s doing it on a regular basis.

“Again, I’ll say it. There are other ones who are a problem for Rangers. Cyriel Dessers isn’t a problem.”

Rangers should keep Dessers after Boyd comments

Boyd’s argument makes sense, Dessers has regularly stepped up for the Gers this season despite constant speculation surrounding his position.

The likes of Igamane and Danilo have ultimately struggled to displace him in the starting line-up despite the noise as Barry Ferguson stuck with the ageing star in his interim spell in charge.

Dessers is often slammed for his prolificacy in front of goal but he has proved to be a regular goalscorer, even when the rest of the team has struggled.

Six-cap international Dessers has made his intentions to stay at Rangers crystal clear, and it would be a tough task to cash in and find someone who can better his output, despite his occasional wastefulness.

The 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh would be better invested their funds in other positions of need and building around the veteran, rather than selling him and trying to find a replacement that can have the same impact.

They may already have to replace the likes of Nico Raskin and Mohamed Diomande, who are set to attract significant attention from Premier League sides in the transfer market.

Dessers could and should stay at Auchenhowie and lead the new era, in a remarkable turnaround to a few months back, when it seemed that his career in Scotland was over.
