‘It’s not about trophies’… Philippe Clement loses sight of the ‘Rangers way’
When Walter Smith was in charge of Rangers, the football on show wasn’t always that of the scintillating variety, a fact often forgotten by the volume of shiny silver things he presented to fans at the end of each season.
Philippe Clement doesn’t have the luxury when it comes to defending his current form as manager as he looks to coax a much-maligned squad into something resembling a cohesive unit at both ends of the park.
The early signs were good a year ago; Rangers were winning games, a trophy was delivered, and Celtic were caught, a return to present day tells an altogether different story.

Philippe Clement not focussed on trophies for Rangers
Things are so bad, that Clement is no longer thinking about adding trophies to the Ibrox trophy cabinent.
Speaking ahead of the Premier Sports Cup clash with Motherwell, the Rangers boss claimed that focus is on one thing, and one thing only:
“It’s not about cups or Europa League or League Cup now,” he said. “It’s about every game. That’s a platform and that’s what we need to create is consistency.
“It’s not about one cup or one thing that’s important. It’s about every three days getting consistency in our basics and not giving that away and out of that, becoming better and growing in the details.
“That’s the disappointing thing about the first goal that we lost against Aberdeen. We didn’t follow our principles or our basics with one player and it opens up everything. Those are harsh lessons, but those are lessons we need to take for the rest of the season.”

Clement needs to learn the Rangers way
It is about trophies. That’s the problem. Talk about formation is irrelevant for fans if their team is winning, if the see a united front and a determination from the players that they have paid a lot of money to watch.
Rangers have never had a “way”, like Real Madrid, cups and league titles are all that matter, not how it is done.
Clement needs to understand this, and understand it quickly. He needs more from his players in terms of the basics of heart, desire, leadership and work ethic.
A shortage of any of the above against Motherwell and he might not get the chance to win any more trophies for Rangers.
