Rangers have confirmed that the SPFL have opened an investigation into the use of smoke bombs by supporters during the club’s opening William Hill Premiership match of the season against Motherwell.

The incidents occurred in the away section at Fir Park, where several pyrotechnics were set off as Russell Martin’s side began their league campaign. The governing body has since contacted Rangers to request a formal response as part of their disciplinary process.

A club spokesperson said Rangers will cooperate fully with the inquiry and reiterated that the use of pyrotechnics inside football stadiums poses a serious safety risk. “Supporter safety is paramount, and while we recognise the passion our fans bring, pyrotechnics are strictly prohibited under competition rules. We will work with the authorities to address this matter,” the statement read.

The SPFL maintain strict regulations regarding the use of flares and smoke bombs, with punishments ranging from warnings and fines to more severe sanctions depending on the outcome of the investigation. Previous cases across Scottish football have seen clubs hit with significant penalties for similar incidents.

The inquiry comes at a time when football authorities across the UK are under increasing pressure to clamp down on pyrotechnics after a rise in their use in recent seasons. Police Scotland are also understood to be monitoring the situation closely.

Rangers will now await the findings of the SPFL investigation before any disciplinary action is confirmed.
