Back in 2019, the ex-Leeds and Liverpool defender suddenly collapsed after suffering from severe headaches and vision problems. What followed changed his life forever. Doctors discovered he was suffering from an aggressive and extremely rare form of brain tumour known as anaplastic ependymoma.
Emergency surgery was needed. The situation was critical.
“It all happened so fast,” Matteo recalled. “One minute I was fine, the next I was being told I needed brain surgery to survive.”
The operation was successful, but the road to recovery was anything but easy. Matteo was left having to relearn basic skills – struggling with reading, writing, and even simple day-to-day tasks.
For a man who had played at the highest level of English football, it was a humbling and terrifying experience.
