Rangers surprise emerges amid links with Hibernian chief Ben Kensell
Rangers would have to put on a “very hard sell” to fans if they hired Hibernian chief executive Ben Kensell, according to Chris Jack.
Speaking on the Rangers Review (13 November), Jack reacted after Jonny MacFarlane mentioned Kensell as a possible candidate to fill the vacancy left by James Bisgrove at Ibrox.
Both Jack and MacFarlane expressed surprise that the Gers hierarchy would opt for the CEO of the team currently bottom of the Premiership having already been knocked back by Jim Gillespie of St. Mirren [The Times, 22 September].
Jack said: “I’m not sure where this rumour has surfaced from or where it’s originated from – it’s certainly not one that I’ve heard.
“I know the board are looking at someone who knows the Scottish football landscape, that’s one of the boxes they would like ticked, but I would be surprised if that’s a move they would be going for.

“It was going to be a hard job to sell bringing someone in from St. Mirren – given Hibs’ position and their recent football fortunes, it would be a very hard sell to try and convince Rangers fans that’s the right route to go down.”

The fact that one of Scottish football’s big two have been without a CEO in the six months since Bisgrove’s exit in May, is scarcely believable, and shows that the club are rudderless from the top-down.
Bringing in a new CEO with experience in the Scottish leagues is proving a tall order for a boardroom which has decreased further in size since Bisgrove left, with even the chairman’s role up in the air.

Interim chairman John Gilligan, who stepped up following John Bennett’s resignation for health reasons, has set out replacing Bisgrove as his key priority, but as yet, very little progress has been made.
Plucking a senior board member from a Premiership club – particularly bottom of the league in Hibs – is proving difficult, and that’s hardly surprising given how poorly the Gers have been run in recent times.
Celtic and Aberdeen appear to be well out in front both on and off the pitch – and certainly in the table – at the moment, and unless the Bears get their CEO appointment right, the current malaise will continue.
In other Rangers news, the club’s January transfer business will be determined by their decision on Philippe Clement’s future.
