The emerging Leeds United transfer rumour which has left sources ‘shocked’

Centre-backs could be the focus for Leeds United in the upcoming summer transfer window. Right now though, the focus will be on Sheffield United.

The January transfer window came and went for Leeds United who didn’t make a single first-team signing in the end. The addition of young goalkeeper Robbie Cook to the development side was the only signing.

Daniel Farke had a couple of pressing issues to sort in January, including his quite desperate need for a centre-back and a striker. Whilst the going remains good for Leeds, a couple of injuries in those areas could really derail the season.

Nonetheless, Leeds go into their Monday night game against 2nd place Sheffield United in good stead, after coming from behind to beat Sunderland 2-1 in their last Championship outing.

Farke’s side remain in 1st place of the table and a win at Bramall Lane on Monday night would put them five point clear of the Blades, and a step closer to the Premier League.

Returning to the Premier League would require some major squad surgery in the summer. Leeds have a good squad for the Championship but they’d no doubt need quite a bit more quality and depth to ensure they can stay in the Premier League. One name linked of late is Conor Coady.

It’s said that Leeds United could swoop for Coady at Leicester City in the event of promotion. But speaking to Leeds United News recently, transfer expert Graeme Bailey has played down the Whites’ rumoured interest in the 10-cap England man.

Bailey explained: “I have not heard that [Leeds’ interest in Coady]. I don’t believe that he would improve the options available to Leeds – I would be shocked. He could offer experience but I think Leeds’ ambitions lie beyond someone like Coady.”

Coady has featured just 11 times in the Premier League with Leicester this season. The Foxes are facing an immediate return to the Championship after a tough season so far in the Premier League.

The centre-back Daniel Farke really wants to sign at Leeds United

Coady would certainly offer depth and experience, but little beyond that, as Bailey suggests. Instead, it looks like Nico Elvedi at Borussia Monchengladbach remains the no.1 defensive target for the Whites ahead of the summer.

Farke has been linked with a return for his former Monchengladbach star for some time now. Recent report have even suggested that Elvedi’s price tag has been slashed ahead of the summer, from £10million to £7.5million, with the Swiss international also keen to seal a Premier League move.

If the Whites can secure promotion then they might straight away plot a move for Elvedi who’d certainly be an upgrade on Coady, and a good signing all round for Leeds United.
