Rangers have just opened door to Steven Gerrard return as interim manager appointed

Ex-Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has emerged as the frontrunner to permanently replace Philippe Clement at Ibrox. And Barry Ferguson being handed the reins on an interim basis means there is room for the Liverpool legend to make a sensational comeback at the end of the season.
Clement was given his marching orders on Sunday for a lacklustre campaign that sees Rangers potentially set to end the season without any silverware, with the disappointing loss to St Mirren at Ibrox being the final nail in the coffin.
Gerrard is currently jobless after a less-than-successful stint at Al-Ettifaq. After departing Ibrox for a shot at the Premier League, he was let go by Aston Villa before making an unexpected move to the Saudi Pro League.
However, his time there ended prematurely this season with Al-Ettifaq languishing near the bottom of the league table.
Despite his recent struggles post-Glasgow, Ally McCoist was quick to suggest the Premiership title-winning boss as a potential permanent replacement for the ousted Clement on Monday morning.

Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “Stevie Gerrard would be in the conversation. Kevin Muscat has won three different leagues in three different countries. There’s one or two options, but there are not any glaring options.”
Reports now indicate why Gerrard is unlikely to take up a new role until at least April.
If he were to accept a position before then, he could face potential tax complications in Saudi Arabia, according to talkSPORT.
Ferguson will be at the helm of Ibrox until the summer, with Allan McGregor, Billy Dodds and Neil McCann forming his new coaching team.
The legendary skipper may persuade the club to extend his contract, but a potential move for Gerrard would only become apparent after the season’s end.
