Barry Ferguson ‘ready’ for Rangers test, sends clear 11 word response to permanent manager question

Barry Ferguson admits that when the call came from Rangers he quite simply couldn’t say no.

The former Ibrox midfielder is one of the club’s most decorated players and a living legend that eats, sleeps and breathes Glasgow Rangers.

After Philippe Clement was relieved of his duties over the weekend, Ferguson has brought together a dream team of Rangers legends to lift Auchenhowie spirits.

 

Now, Barry Ferguson has addressed a press conference as Rangers manager for the first time and has explained his reasons for taking the gig.

“I had a quiet life for a few years,” said Ferguson. “I was enjoying a new role at the club.

“I was a club ambassador for the past year and a half. Really enjoying doing that side of it.

 

“But listen, when you get offered the opportunity, there was no way I was turning it down. And so I’m just glad I’ve took it. And we’ll see where it goes.

 

“But look, I’m confident. I’m confident in my ability. I’m confident in my staff’s ability and also the players.”

Barry Ferguson has taken an unorthodox route back to Rangers Football Club ever since leaving as a player in 2009.

 

The former Rangers captain has had spells as a manager in the lower leagues of Scotland but in the last few years has been working as a pundit and an ambassador for Rangers.

 

There have been suggestions that the 47-year-old might’ve bitten off more than he can chew at Ibrox, suggestions that Ferguson naturally refutes.

“I wouldn’t be sitting here if I didn’t feel ready,” said Ferguson. “That was three years ago. I went down a different route, if I’m being honest with you.

 

“As I said, I came back and done a different role for the club as an ambassador. Did I want to go back into coaching and management? If I’m brutally honest, I wasn’t thinking about it.

 

”But when that phone call comes, there was no way that I was going to turn it down.

 

“And being back now a couple of days, it just excites me. I’m excited about it. I’m desperate to get started.

 

“I love being out on the grass today with the players and I can’t wait to get out in the touchline come eight o’clock tomorrow night.”

 

Barry Ferguson on becoming permanent Rangers manager

Rangers are in the midst of a sizeable period of upheaval and probably could’ve done without sacking Philippe Clement.

 

But after back-to-back Ibrox defeats against Queen’s Park and St Mirren, the Belgian’s position became untenable.

 

Barry Ferguson will take interim charge of Rangers over the next 11 weeks with a new sporting director to be appointed and a US-takeover, all things being equal, to be completed.

But as for any of Ferguson’s own ambitions to be appointed manager, the former Rangers captain refused to be drawn on the subject.

”I’m not even thinking that far in front,” said Ferguson. “The only thing I’m concerned about is Wednesday night at Kilmarnock, if I am being brutally honest with you.

 

“I’m here until the end of the season. But my main objective is to start winning games on a consistent basis. So one game at a time. And that’s what I’m at tomorrow. I’m fully focused on Kilmarnock.”
