Barry Ferguson to be ‘let down’ in Rangers manager race amid ‘ramshackle’ claim

Barry Ferguson is facing major hurdles in his hopes of being appointed as the permanent manager at Rangers.

Ferguson was installed as the head coach of Rangers until the end of the season after they sacked Philippe Clement following a 2-0 defeat against St Mirren at Ibrox on 22 February.

The former Gers captain has had a mixed start to life back in Govan, tasting a victory and a defeat each in his two games so far.

While the appointment of a permanent manager has been put on hold until the proposed takeover by 49ers Enterprises goes through, there have been discussions about Ferguson being potentially handed the job permanently.

Michael Gannon tips Ferguson for Ibrox disappointment

Adding his two cents to the conversation, Michael Gannon has said that he would not be surprised to see Ferguson being considered for the job of permanent manager, especially if he does well between now and the end of the season.

However, the journalist reckons it will be hard for the Scot to ultimately land the job, not because of what he does or what the new ownership thinks, but because his players will let him down.

He went on to hit out at the current crop of Rangers players for being unreliable and described them as “ramshackle”.

 

“I just keep thinking these players might let him down in the next 10 games or so”, Gannon said on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (3 March).

“There is no evidence to suggest they will do anything but let him down in the next 10 games, so I don’t think they are going to help fulfil his cause in that respect.

 

“So, whoever is watching and whoever is going to be taking over in terms of the ownership, I think, has to look beyond what he does with this ramshackle bunch of players, who aren’t reliable in any way, shape or form.

 

“So, they will have to detach that and analyse it from a different point of view. That means it might be tough to become the manager full-time.”

 

 

Russell Martin in running for Rangers job

Several managers have been linked with the hot seat at Ibrox since Clement was sacked over a week ago.

 

Among them is Russell Martin, who is currently without a job after being relieved of his duties by Southampton in December.

 

Another candidate mooted for the managerial job at Rangers is David Wagner.

 

Like Martin, Wagner is also not contracted to any particular team at the moment, with his last stint with Norwich ending in May last year.

 

However, no such decision will be taken until the takeover is finalised, meaning more managers are likely to enter the fray in the coming months.

 

Until then, Ferguson has a shot at convincing the Gers power brokers that he is capable of leading the team forward.
