Andrew Cavenagh breaks Rangers US takeover silence with perfect date mooted to announce £100m deal

One part of Rangers’ prospective new US ownership in Andrew Cavenagh was at Ibrox to watch the club stun Fenerbahce in the Europa League.

Rangers are on the verge of a US takeover led by healthcare mogul Cavenagh and US sports consortium 49ers Enterprises.

 

The £100m takeover will see the Americans take a 51% stake at Ibrox with the deal expected to be completed by the end of May.

 

Cavenagh was in situ to watch Rangers defeat Fenerbahce on penalties and propel the Ibrox club to the Europa League Quarter Finals.

Andrew Cavenagh takes in Rangers v Fenerbahce

After the match, Sky Sports managed to get some comment from the incoming Rangers owner but Cavenagh was tight-lipped on any takeover talk.

 

 

Explaining that he was only at Ibrox to support Rangers against Fenerbahce, the American’s presence in Glasgow reaffirms reports that a takeover is edging closer.

Rangers have reached the Europa League Quarter Finals after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Fenerbahce with Jack Butland the hero in Glasgow.

 

Jose Mourinho took aim at the officiating come full-time but it’s Rangers who progress despite losing 2-0 on the night, the foundations of the victory set in the 3-1 win away in Turkey.

 

Athletic Bilbao now lie in wait for Rangers who will welcome the Spaniards to Glasgow for the first leg of the Europa League Quarter Final on April 10th.

With the broad terms of the agreement to takeover Rangers widely agreed, there is now a period of due diligence as Dave King looks to cement his Ibrox ’legacy’ with the takeover.

 

But when it comes to announcing the Rangers takeover, Ibrox fans already have their eyes set on the perfect date.

 

With Celtic 16 points clear in the Scottish Premiership, the Parkhead side are a shoo-in to lift this season’s title and match Rangers’ world record haul of 55 championships.

 

They’re not there yet but the date of their victory will become clear in the weeks ahead.

 

On the day that the Parkhead club lift the trophy, it would be a real shame if another major Scottish football story was to dominate the headlines…
