Barry Ferguson tipped for transfer boost after £21.67m windfall in ‘great news for all Rangers fans’ for Celtic battle
Lee McCulloch has tipped Philippe Clement to be asking the Rangers hierarchy for some of the eight-figure cash boost received from the club’s participation in Europe so far this season.
After the Light Blues’ stunning 3-2 win at Real Betis sent them through to the knockout stages as group winners the total is now up to £21.67million earned from the continental campaign to this point.
And speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show on 15 December the former Ibrox captain has backed the manager to receive the benefit of some of that with the club thought to be ready to back in him January, and if Rangers can stay in touch with Celtic to that point he believes it could be a close title race.
McCulloch said (6m 40s): “It’s great money but it’s probably money that they’ve deserved for their performances and the points they’ve picked up. It’ll just be interesting to see if Clement is asking for some of that money.”
“He’s got to be hasn’t he?” replied host Peter Martin.

“Some money, yes,” McCulloch continued. “I think he will. I think they already came out at the AGM and said they were going to back him as much as they can, which will be brilliant news for all Rangers fans, to maybe strengthen that team.
“If they can stay in touch with Celtic right up to the break and then get the chance to strengthen then, who knows, it might be quite a close title race.”

Allowing for a few rough performances in recent weeks Clement has already done a solid job getting more out of the current squad that Michael Beale was managing.
And with the injury list getting ever-longer the Belgian went to Spain and recorded the best result of his tenure so far to prolong the club’s involvement in the Europa League.
Should he back it up with the League Cup on Sunday he has surely earned proper backing from the board in January.
Rangers
It would be assumed that he will be able to do more with a few players that he has chosen added to the ranks, although the same was expected of Beale prior to this summer and it turned out much the opposite.
With Celtic dropping points in the SPFL the Light Blues could be in position to go into the window top of the table, as long as they don’t throw away the momentum that has now built up between now and the 30 December Old Firm.
If they are anywhere close to that and Clement is given the benefit of some of the European millions then belief will start to build towards a title charge for real.
Right now it is vital they beat Aberdeen to secure the first trophy of the campaign, even more so than the victory on Thursday night, and push on from there.
