Ben Davies is ‘flattered’ to be feeling the love of Birmingham City’s supporters – but a permanent transfer isn’t at the forefront of his thinking as Blues enter the business end of the season fighting on two fronts.

 

The on-loan Rangers defender has been a revelation at the back alongside Christoph Klarer and helped Blues keep another shut-out against Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

 

 

Blues are nine points clear at the top of League One and face Bradford City in the Vertu Trophy semi-final on Tuesday with a place at Wembley up for grabs.

Blues boast the best defensive record in League One, thanks in no small part to Davies’ contribution. In the 28 matches Davies has played, Blues have conceded just 12 goals with him on the field. Fifteen of their 18 clean sheets this season have been earned with Davies in the starting XI.

 

It is no surprise supporters have taken to the softly-spoken defender, with many calling for the club to pursue a permanent transfer in the summer.

“I don’t go on social media, or not looking for myself at least, so I haven’t noticed but if that’s the case it’s really flattering and brilliant to have their support,” said Davies.

 

There isn’t an option-to-buy in Blues’ loan agreement with Rangers but Davies’ future does appear to lie away from Ibrox.

 

He added: “I haven’t thought about it yet, I just wanted to come out and do a year’s loan and try and get going again because it was a bit stop-start at Rangers for me. I’m happy with the way it’s going but I haven’t thought past now.

“I came here looking to play as many games as possible and when I first came I realised the strength-in-depth that the squad had and the quality that they had all over the pitch, especially at the back so it took a bit of time and I’ve been patient. I’ve done a good run of games now so it feels good.”
