Celtic and Brendan Rodgers hailed for doing ‘the opposite’ of Pep Guardiola and Manchester City

Celtic and Brendan Rodgers have a big summer ahead.

Yes, there are still some key matters to deal with, such as winning another Premiership title and Celtic pushing for another Treble if they can land the Scottish Cup.

But then, matters will turn to the summer transfer window after Celtic failed to strengthen their squad in January after Kyogo Furuhashi left for Rennes.

It’s going to be paramount that the powers that be get their transfer business done as quickly as possible because Celtic have to qualify for the Champions League this time around.

Get that done, then the fans can start to dream again and really look forward to what is going to be another watchable Champions League campaign.

Celtic progressed in the Champions League this season and were very unlucky to bow out in the manner in which they did after late heartache in Munich.

Added to that, Stephen Warnock was impressed by Rodgers’ approach in Bavaria and how they took the game to Bayern.

The former Premier League left-back compared Celtic’s second-leg tactics to Manchester City’s and how they did the ‘opposite’ to Pep Guardiola’s side, as he told Football Focus.

Manchester City conceded inside four minutes at Real Madrid, and were 3-0 down by the hour mark, far different to how Celtic took the game to Munich.

“You got to an away ground and go to attack someone, go press them high, take the game to them,” said Warnock.

“Celtic did exactly the opposite of what Manchester City did (against Real Madrid). This was all heart. Desire. It was a gameplan set-up to effectively go and hurt Bayern. Find the weakest points of Bayern Munich.

“This is the hardest part – Johnston switches off for a fraction of a second, but that’s Champions League football. That’s the highest level of football. A lapse in concentration can cost you.

“So sad for Celtic because they have done incredibly well, but they have earned a ton of money within this competition and with this new format.”

Who got knocked out of the Champions League alongside Celtic?

The revamped Champions League format was brought in to boost the clubs’ bank balances, but also level the playing field and provide added drama.

In truth, it has worked so far because a fair few big teams are already out and the round of 16 games haven’t even begun yet.
