Dundee’s push to land highly-rated Celtic youngster Colby Donovan has hit a stumbling block, with the Dens Park club still waiting on the green light to finalise a deal.
Head coach Steven Pressley has openly admitted his admiration for the 18-year-old defender, who has been on Dundee’s radar throughout the summer transfer window. The Dark Blues are eager to strengthen their options at right-back and see Donovan as an ideal fit, with a loan deal the preferred route.
However, the move has been complicated by Celtic’s own immediate needs. Brendan Rodgers is reluctant to sanction an exit until the Hoops’ Champions League qualifying campaign is settled, with Donovan considered a valuable squad option during the busy early-season schedule. That has left Dundee in limbo as they await a final decision from Parkhead.
Championship side Ayr United have also expressed an interest, but Dundee are believed to be in pole position should Celtic allow the youngster to move. Pressley remains hopeful, insisting talks have been positive, but admitted the transfer is now a matter of timing rather than willingness.
With the summer window closing on September 1, Dundee face a race against the clock to get Donovan through the door. The teenager, regarded as one of Celtic’s brightest academy products, would be seen as a major coup for the Tayside outfit if the deal is completed.
For now, the situation remains delicately poised, with Donovan’s future hinging on Celtic’s European commitments in the coming weeks.
