O’Neill, who made a sensational return to Celtic Park following Brendan Rodgers’ shock resignation, spoke candidly about the state of Scottish football and the gap between the Glasgow rivals.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Celtic boss was asked about Rangers’ prospects under new manager Danny Rohl. O’Neill didn’t hold back, saying:
“Rangers are no threat whatsoever. They’re so far adrift it’s untrue. The problems there are deep and not something a new coach can fix overnight.”
The 72-year-old, who previously guided Celtic to multiple league titles and European success, suggested that even with Rohl’s modern approach, Rangers’ issues appear “structural” and will take time to resolve.
O’Neill also admitted he expects Hearts to emerge as potential challengers in the title race, given their strong early-season form, adding that competition at the top could be “refreshing for Scottish football.”
His comments have sparked mixed reactions among fans, with Celtic supporters praising his confidence while Rangers fans view the statement as premature given Rohl’s limited time in charge.
Rangers, meanwhile, recently secured a 3–1 home win over Kilmarnock, offering a glimmer of progress as Rohl looks to steady the ship and revive their campaign.
