Flamengo boss reveals Alcaraz messages with Everton deal all but done

Flamengo boss Filipe Luis has revealed his sadness to lose Carlos Alcaraz as a switch to Everton set to be completed.

The Toffees are preparing to announce the signing of the Argentine midfielder before the 11pm deadline on Monday (3 February) after passing his medical at Goodison [Bruno Lemos].

With a return Premier League moving ever closer for the 22-year-old, his current manager Luis has shared what the ex-Juventus man said before deciding to move to Merseyside.

Speaking to Placar (2 February), transcribed by Sports Witness, the Brazilian head coach said: “Alcaraz called me on Thursday and said, ‘Filipe, I want to talk. I have an offer from Everton Are you counting on me?’

“I said, ‘You’re after someone in your position, you’re after all of them.’ It’s up to you to want to fight and fight for your place on the team. He said, ‘Okay, I’ll fight for your place on the team.’

“I told him what I thought I wanted to improve; we had a sincere conversation. He said, ‘Okay. I’ll try.’ He showed it, he scored the goal, he played well. The next day, he decided to leave.

“I’m sad, I feel like it’s my failure, his failure for not working out in my hands. Given the investment made, that was my concern, a big investment and I’m not getting the best out of him.

“He decided to leave. I believe he can be happy. I sent him a message and he replied. I love Alcaraz. Why did he get minutes? Because he doesn’t give up, he wants to learn, he tries, he fights, he makes an effort.

“He runs, runs, runs. I insisted until the end. Not everyone will succeed. I hope he’s happy, I love this kid.”

Carlos Alcaraz to leave Flamengo for Everton

David Moyes looks set to finally bring his first player in since returning to Merseyside in January.

The Scot has done well so far, winning three games with the performances against Tottenham and Leicester City being particularly eye-catching.

Regardless of this form, it can be said that reinforcements would only boost the form of the Toffees and improve the squad across the rest of the season.

That seems to be what has been done with a deal for Alcaraz who looks set to add to the midfield conversation in L4.

This is certainly necessary after losing Orel Mangala to injury against Brighton which is likely to see him ruled out for the rest of the season.

Although the Argentine isn’t a direct replacement for the Lyon loanee, it is certainly a positive move to bring the Flamengo ace in to add numbers to the squad at Goodison.

It is clear how highly rated the ex-Southampton man is at Flamengo which can only bode well for the Toffees.

In other Everton news, a Euro club could still make a last-ditch bid for one ace on deadline day.
