Former Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is the bookmakers’ favourite to become the new Rangers manager as pressure continues to pile on Philippe Clement

The Gers’ shock loss against Scottish Championship side Queens Park in the Scottish Cup on Sunday increased calls for the club to part company with Clement. However, as it stands, he will be in the dugout for the league match against Hearts on Sunday.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard has been tipped to make a return to Ibrox after a previous three-year spell between 2018 and 2021. He’s the favourite to replace Clement at a price of 2/1.

However, it seems that he could face competition from a rival from his playing days. Former Manchester United and Everton striker Wayne Rooney also features in the odds and is the fifth favourite to take the role at a price of 5/1.

They have both been out of work since leaving their post at Al-Ettifaq and Plymouth Argyle respectively. Prior to moving to Saudi Arabia, Gerrard coached Aston Villa for 11 months after replacing Dean Smith in the dugout at Villa Park.

His time at Al-Ettifaq lasted 18 months while Rooney departed Plymouth after just seven months – leaving the team rock bottom of the Championship table.
