Steven Gerrard is not expected to be appointed as Rangers manager.

 

The former Gers boss was amongst the frontrunners with Davide Ancelotti to replace Barry Ferguson who left his interim role at the end of the season.

 

 

 

The former Liverpool star has reportedly ruled himself out of the running for the Ibrox gig, but he could still return.

While it looks unlikely that the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership winning manager will come back to Govan this time, he may well return at some point.

 

A report from the Scottish Sun (30 May) claims that he has told friends that he still wishes to be considered for the post in the future.

It states that right now he would like to spend more time with his family as he is set to become a grandfather for the first time.

Rangers do not need Gerrard reunion right now

The Gers would be wise to steer away from their former boss at the current moment.

 

The 49ers Enterprises group have to get the next appointment, otherwise the Auchenhowie outfit risks going backwards and falling further behind Celtic.

 

Gerrard’s development as a manager has stalled after miserable stints in charge of Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq and bringing him back would have been a huge risk.

 

The former Light Blues boss never faced a Hoops side that is as strong as the one that his former manager at Anfield, Brendan Rodgers, has at his disposal right now.

 

The squad in Govan is in need of a massive rebuild and there is no guarantee that Gerrard would be the right man to oversee that.

 

There is no doubt that he would bring the feel-good factor back and a familiarity with the club that no other candidate has and his high-pressing 4-3-3 system works in Scottish football.

 

However, Paraag Marathe and Co should move on to a more ambitious target, like Ancelotti, who has the connections to revolutionise their transfer market pull.

 

The best option is for Gerrard to come back when the squad and overall situation at the club is in a better place, if he is to ever return at all.
