I rejected Celtic to join Rangers — now I’m a European club’s record signing and enjoyed dream debut

Robbie Ure grew up with the dream of starring for boyhood heroes Rangers, but the striker is now making a mark 1,600 miles from Govan.

The 21-year-old, who scored on his Gers debut in a 3-1 win against Queen of the South in 2022 under Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s management, rejected an extended deal at Ibrox to try his hand in European football with Anderlecht nine months later.

And Ure wasted no time paying back the fee, as he marked his debut on March 31 by setting up both his side’s goals in a 2-1 away win against Varnamo.

As a highly rated youngster, Robbie was chased by both sides of the Old Firm – but the decision wasn’t one he had to think hard about. Speaking to Upsala Nya Tidning in Sweden, he explained: “Glasgow is my home and my whole family lives there.

“When I was young I had the option to go to either Rangers or Celtic but it wasn’t a difficult decision. My whole family were Rangers so I went there and stayed for ten years.

“For me it’s the biggest and best rivalry in the world. Everything is brutal. League position and every game is so important to the fans and the club. And the bragging rights in the city are what the fans live for.

“I did a few other sports too but football was the serious thing. Growing up in Glasgow, football is the only thing that matters. I started playing when I was five, six. I played with a local team and scouts came to watch the games and I think I was eight or nine when they said I was welcome to play with Rangers.”

And marking his Rangers debut with a goal was a special moment for Ure, who celebrated his first start for his boyhood club by opening the scoring in the League Cup clash.

He continued: “It was truly a dream come true for me. It was a perfect day and a perfect evening. I am still grateful to the manager at the time, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, for that opportunity.

“It is something that my family and I look back on with pride. I am happy that I got to make my debut and also score a goal. It was great and I enjoyed going to training every day, playing for Rangers.”

Dealing with expectations at Ibrox mean that Ure doesn’t feel the pressure when it comes to his price tag, or filling the boots of Yousef Salech, the club’s talisman who left for Cardiff City in a big money January deal.

He added: “I heard about Yousef. I looked it up before I signed. I can’t control it (the transfer fee).
