The celebration by the Czech winger has dominated the talking points in Scottish football since derby day. Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny sparked controversy when he celebrated a late winner at Celtic Park by soaking the home support.
And Maurice Ross knows exactly what it’s like to get the full fury of the Celtic fans after dealing with his own controversial crowd interaction in Glasgow’s east end during his time in light blue. Hamza Igamane’s strike against the Hoops on Sunday sparked wild scenes in the away dugout as Barry Ferguson and Co celebrated.
Cerny was caught by the TV cameras squirting a bottle of water in the direction of the Parkhead diehards – leading to police and security intervened after a furious reaction. Cops alongside the SFA are now probing the flashpoint – and it reminded Ross of his own clash with the punters that went under the radar back in 2002. During the classic derby day showdown, Ross would be protected by security after thumping the ball at a Celtic fan during the 3-3 thriller.
Speaking to Open Goal, the former Ibrox defender said: “This water fight thing where he squirts the water – my mate text me saying ‘it wasn’t as bad as when you hit that Celtic fan with the ball.’ “So see at Celtic Park, the pitch is kind of elevated by the front wall that they have. “My perception when I’m looking at that wall – they were all giving me pelters – is I can hit the ball, give them a fright, and it would come back to me.
“I have scudded this person right off of their shoulder. They (the Celtic fans) were climbing over the seats and everything. “The security guards made it worse – they put a ring around me like I was a criminal or something like that.
“It is the only time the Rangers fans have ever sung for me – ‘one Maurice Ross’. Only time.
“See if I had tried to hit the person, it would have missed.”
