HERE WE GO: ‘If he leaves’ – Rangers address Cyriel Dessers future after Scottish Cup hat-trick

‘If he leaves’ – Rangers address Cyriel Dessers future after Scottish Cup hat-trick

Striker could depart in January under one stipulation

Philippe Clement wouldn’t guarantee that Cyriel Dessers would remain at Ibrox beyond the end of the month despite the striker claiming a hat-trick in Rangers’ Scottish Cup win over Fraserburgh.

Dessers has expressed his frustration that he has fallen behind Hamza Igamane in the pecking order and suggested to Dutch media that the club might be tempted to sell him.

His hat-trick takes him to 16 goals for the season but, on his player’s future, Clement would only say that Dessers would only be allowed to leave if a striker of a similar calibre came in.

The manager said: “Cyriel is a really great character to have in the dressing room. He always works hard. Of course, he’s not happy if he cannot get more minutes like he had in the past. But that’s football at the highest level.

“It’s competition. But he kept on working, he kept on fighting. That’s why he’s also ready to play these games and to score a hat-trick.

“If Cyriel goes, you need to replace him. And it needs to be at least the same quality. If a player stays and he plays less and becomes, because of that, unhappy and his level goes down – which I don’t fear with him – it’s also not good for the club.

“So, we will see in the next two weeks what happens. I know if he’s here, he will give everything for the club. And if he leaves, he needs to be replaced by somebody at least of the same quality.”

Rangers now head south to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League and Clement vowed to go there looking for a positive result away from home.

“I want pressure on the team,” he added. “I want my team to be ambitious. So, that’s what we’re going to do. The team has worked really hard to be in a good position in this Europa League.

“We know what Manchester United is. We know their level. But we’re going to go there to fight and to show ourselves and to do something really special.”
