GOOD NEWS: Ipswich Town Football Club has finally announced plans to expand and modernize their historic Portman Road stadium, aiming to increase its capacity from 29,673 to 40,000 seats.

This ambitious project is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate the area surrounding the stadium, in collaboration with Ipswich Borough Council.

Central to the redevelopment is the modernization of the Cobbold Stand, originally constructed in 1971. The club has secured an “in-principle agreement” to acquire adjacent land from the council, facilitating this expansion. The masterplan also includes the development of an aquatics centre, a new multi-storey car park to replace existing facilities, and a hotel, all aimed at enhancing the matchday experience for fans and benefiting the local community.

Ipswich Town’s chairman and chief executive, Mark Ashton, emphasized the importance of these developments, stating that the club is committed to providing supporters with top-tier matchday facilities and experiences. He also highlighted that the stadium’s design has evolved without a comprehensive estate strategy, underscoring the need for this redevelopment.

While the Cobbold Stand’s redevelopment is a significant aspect of the project, the club plans to initially focus on expanding the West Stand by approximately 4,000 seats. This phased approach aims to minimize disruption to season ticket holders and maintain stadium capacity during construction.
