Italy release statement on Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto’s injury

Italy release statement on Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto’s injury

Just as it looked like Wilfried Gnonto might be gaining his place back in the Leeds United squad, it all went wrong on Friday night.

After the Italian has struggled for game time, Gnonto was lauded for his display vs QPR which could send serious signals to Daniel Farke.

The Leeds winger hasn’t had game time with Manor Solomon and Dan James in fine form for the Whites.

It seemed that after the international break, the Leeds boss might hand him more opportunities after his glowing stint against QPR.

However, Gnonto has now picked up an injury whilst away with Italy under-21s, and the potential problem has been revealed.

Italy statement on Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto after injury

It already seems like Gnonto’s future at Leeds is uncertain and this injury for Italy won’t do him any favours of regaining Farke’s trust.

Being at the start of the international break it’s the last thing any manager wants to see especially a player who is desperate to prove himself.

After Gnonto has had limited minutes at Leeds, the 21-year-old will be hopeful his latest setback isn’t too alarming as Italy’s media released a statement during the game, saying: “The striker is forced to leave due to an ankle problem.”

The Azzuri have said they don’t know the full extent of Gnonto’s injury just yet, as Leeds journalist Adam Pope has suggested where Gnonto’s injury lies.

Pope said: “Re Gnonto we will have to wait and see. One contact in Italy says it was an unfortunate injury, needs to be checked over but it could be a muscular problem. Know more I guess when it settles down.”

Farke will be on red alert Saturday night with Leeds stars in action

Following Gnonto’s unfortunate injury this will leave Farke wondering, what could happen next.

It’s never an ideal time for an international break, especially when 16 Leeds stars are playing for their nations.

But more so now with the Championship run-in around the corner, as Farke will have to be on red alert for other players in action on Saturday.

With Gnonto being a winger, James and Solomon will also be in action for Wales and Israel respectively, as the Leeds boss will praying no more bad news comes his way.

Another injury to a crucial Leeds player could no doubt prove detrimental to the Whites’ promotion bid.
