Jefte to Chelsea takes twist as details emerge of ‘wonderful’ £10.5m deal for Brazilian left-back

Chelsea links to Rangers’ Brazilian left-back Jefte made headlines this week.

The 20-year-old has only been at Ibrox for six months but is already turning heads south of the border with Jefte first linked to Chelsea in Brazil.

Rangers are clear they want to keep hold of the ex-Fluminense left-back, who has been a key feature of the team this season, although the kid is being tipped for the top.

In the meantime, Chelsea also appear to have set their sights elsewhere, opening their big blue chequebook to sign one of Brazilian football’s brightest talents.

Chelsea strike ‘wonderful’ £10.5m Brazil deal

Corinthians president Augusto Melo has been opening up on the astonishing €8m Chelsea swoop for 16-year-old defender Denner this week.

Speaking to Meu Timao in Brazil, Melo has revealed Chelsea will pay an initial €8m (£6.7m) for the Corinthians defender with another €4.5m (£3.8m) in add-ons.

Remarkably, Corinthians are set to be paid €100k (£84k) for every game Denner plays.

Melo said: “It’s a wonderful sale. He’s 16 years old, hasn’t played a single professional game. It’s a proposal worth €8m, for a promise that we don’t know if it will work.

“There is €8m in cash. For every game he enters, we will have a bonus of €100k.”

Rangers fans will certainly take note of the £10.5m Chelsea deal for Denner with regards those transfer links to Jefte.

Given the defender is only 16 – and hasn’t actually played a professional game – there is clearly a lot of development to be made in Denner’s game.

Jefte urged to stay at Rangers

Given Jefte is four years older than Denner, and has substantially more first team experience, Chelsea might yet view the Rangers star as a more developed option.

But Philippe Clement has urged the young Brazilian to stay put with the Belgian manager convinced Rangers is the best place for the defender’s development.

“100% sure, yes,” said Clement said when asked if Rangers was the best place for Jefte right now.

”So I know that kind of clubs. I had some players going there, or similar clubs. Maybe one day, if he makes a normal evolution, what he’s been doing now, I think one day he will be ready for that.

“But for the moment, it’s too early. And I think this is a really good place for him to develop. So he’s totally not busy with all these rumours, totally not.”
